WTSEA "Seniors Getting
There Safely"
It's a fact -
aging does have an affect on your driving. But that doesn't necessarily mean
you have to give up your license.
Taking a refresher course might enable you to hold on to your license
for years to come. That's why Lacey Fire District 3 offers driver safety
classes designed specifically for mature drivers.
Why Take a Driver Safety Class?
Washington Traffic Safety
and Education Association's "Seniors Getting There Safely" is a refresher
driving course for senior drivers. It includes speakers, videos, and class
interaction. No actual driving is involved. This course helps you:
|
| |
- Tune up your driving skills
and update your knowledge of the latest rules of the road.
- Learn about normal
age-related physical changes, and how to adjust your driving to allow for these
changes.
- Reduce your traffic
violations, crashes, and chances for injuries for you, your passengers, and
others on the roadway.
- Drive more safely.
- Get an insurance discount.
All auto insurance companies in Washington must provide a multiyear discount to
graduates!
What Will I Learn by
Taking the Course?
You can
expect to learn about current rules of the road, new laws, how to operate your
vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment,
and some adjustments to common age-related changes in vision, hearing, and
reaction time. You will learn about:
- Maintaining proper following
distance at all times.
- The safest way to change
lanes and make turns at intersections.
- The effects of medications
on driving.
- Minimizing the effect of
dangerous blind spots and night time driving.
- Limiting driver distractions
such as eating, smoking and cell phone use.
- Properly using safety belts,
air bags, and anti-lock brakes.
- Maintaining physical
flexibility and learning to monitor your own driving abilities.
After completing the course,
you'll develop a greater appreciation of driving challenges and how you can
avoid potential collisions and injuries to yourself and others. Interested?
What Else do I Need to
Know?
Though geared for
drivers age 50 and older, the course is open to people of any age. Speakers
include a pharmacist, Department of License representative, Thurston County
Traffic Deputy, Washington State Patrol Trooper, and an auto insurance
representative.
