Proper
equipment and protective helmets on the slopes can help protect your child from
injury. But it's also important to take safety precautions when your child is
playing outside or going to or from school on foot or on bike, especially with
the shorter, darker days of winter upon us. Here are some helpful tips on
keeping your child safe this winter.
- Require children to wear
retro-reflective materials and carry a flashlight at dawn, dusk, and in other
low-light situations such as rainy or foggy weather.
- Make sure your child wears a
properly fitted helmet when biking.
- Never allow children under
age 10 to cross streets alone.
- Always model and teach
proper pedestrian behavior.
- Cross streets at a corner
using traffic signals and crosswalks whenever possible.
- Make eye contact with
drivers prior to crossing in front of them. Don't assume that because you can
see the driver, the driver can see you.
- Instruct children to look
left, right, and left again when crossing a street and to continue looking as
they cross.
- Prohibit play in driveways,
streets, parking lots, and unfenced yards adjacent to streets.
